National criticised for ‘mindlessness’

PA Dunedin A former National Cabinet minister, Mr Jonathan Elworthy, yesterday criticised the National Party for its “mindless opposition and criticism.” Mr Elworthy is standing for the Otago Regional Council in the local body elections. He was replying to the Otago member of Parliament, Mr Warren Cooper, who this week questioned the need for regional councils and criticised the amount of money it costs to run them. “National’s credibility would be enhanced if criticism was accompanied by constructive alternatives,” Mr

Elworthy said. “Mr Cooper should have taken the trouble to inform himself that the role of regional councils is defined very precisely.” An allegation that people were standing for regional councils just for the money was a gross insult to those who believed they had a useful contribution to make to their community, said Mr Elworthy. The Otago Catchment Board chairman and a regional council candidate, Mr John Scanland, said Mr Cooper’s comments showed lack of knowledge of regional council responsibilities.
