Female kakapo released
PA Invercargill 1 The Minister of Conservation, Mr Philip 1 Woollaston (centre), t helps two conservation i officers, Sandra King (left) and Alan Munn, < remove a transmitter 1 from Jane, a female kakapo, before releas- 1 ing her on Codfish <
Island. Jane was released to live amid 20 males, said the Conservation Department yesterday. Jane is only the eleventh female of the 42 kakapo known to exist, and she joins five other females and the males on Codfish Island.
Mr Woollaston liberated the rare native parrot, which was discovered last Saturday on nearby Stewart Island. The department has been conducting a sweep of that island because the very few birds which may still remain there are at great risk from
predatory wild cats. Jane was named after the wife of Douglas Adams, the conservationist and author of “The Hitch-Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy,” who visited the island this year while compiling a documentary on seven of the world’s most endangered species.
