Lottery Board to cover Games?
PA Wellington The Lottery Board will be asked to increase its contribution to the Commonwealth Games, possibly by giving enough money to make up the expected shortfall in funding.
The potential budget deficit for ttie January Games is estimated at about $25 million and this week the Deputy Prime Minister, Ms Clark, said the Government was not in a position to bail out the organisers. “There really isn’t much point coming back to Government for further money,” she said. But the Opposition Coromandel member of Parliament, Mr Graeme Lee, said yesterday he would be asking the Lottery Board to increase its grant.
The board has already promised $6 million this year and a further $6 million next year for the Games, but Mr Lee said lottery funds could be used to cover the deficit. Mr Lee is a member of the six-person Lottery Board, chaired by the Minister of Internal Affairs, Dr Bassett, who is on an overseas trip.
