Police cuts

Sir,—The announcement of cuts in front-line police has left me stunned. With the crime rate rising rapidly and violence, sexual offending and drugrelated offences all on the increase, how could anyone in his right mind cut down on the active police force? Already battered on all sides with no jobs, withering services and decimated industries, the public now have to face this new bombshell. What next? Complete social disorder? A great exercise in brainwashing has been achieved by this Government We all know how very intelligent its members are and that everything is for our own good. Ha! Too much intelligence may not be a good thing. There is a missing ingredient in most of the Labour M.P.s — good, old common sense. To take an axe to the police force. Where is the sanity in that? — Yours, etc.,

J. E. KIRKE. August 28, 1989.
