Trout farming ‘problem’

Commercial trout farming had caused problems for fisheries in Scotland and England, the vicepresident of the Canterbury Fly Fishing Club, Mr Paul Farrow, said yesterday. Mr Farrow who returned from an overseas fishing trip, said trout farming in Britain meant many fishermen went to sell to the market- $
Trout farming has been proposed as an income earner for New Zealand by the Trade Development Board. Mr Farrow said that in Britain the pressure on the rivers seriously depleted the fish stocks. He said millions of dollars were being poured into fish farming in the Scottish Highlands to boost the area under the E.C. .programmes, and New Zealand farmers would find it toiwh to compete.
