Spanish Star may distance rivals

Auckland correspondent Spanish Star after showing much promise as a stayer, could finally be rewarded with his first win over a middle distance in the Cooper, White and Associates Handicap at Pukekohe tomorrow. Spanish Star had his introduction to staying last year when given one run over a middle distance. This winter, however, he has been put to the test on more occasions and he has produced some eye-catching runs. His first big effort over ground was when right behind the placegetters in Grey Bo’s Fay Richwhite Cornwall Handicap at Ellerslie. More recently, he was a gallant third in Escalation’s Te Awamutu Cup and a fair sixth to Mickey’s Town in the Taumarunui Gold Cup at Te Rapa. For all those races Spanish Star was trained by Gary Mudgway, who retired after the Taumarunui meeting. Spanish Star then switched to the Cambridge stable of Alan Jones and he had his first start from his new quarters at Ellerslie last Saturday and finished a fair seventh over 1600 m.
