Auckland’s advantage

Rivalry between Auckland and Canterbury has been close as it has been long, but Auckland’s superior record in recent years has given it the over-all advantage in their rugby relationship which dates back to 1875. Before Auckland ended a 29-match unbeaten sequence by Canterbury at Eden Park in 1984 — and the 32-3 loss was the biggest margin suffered by Canterbury — the record showed Auckland had won 26 contests, Canterbury 25 and there had been five draws.

In the last five years Auckland has advanced its win total to 33 and Canterbury to 27. Auckland’s win in 1984, however, halted a Canterbury winning run against it which extended for seven matches from 1977. Auckland also had a successful sequence in the early days when it was unbeaten in nine matches from 1898 to 1914. Canterbury won the first contest after World War I, but Auckland won the other matches through the 19205. The most points scored by Canterbury were 42 in

1973 while Auckland’s top score was 35 in 1925. Canterbury’s last win against Auckland was in the South Pacific championship two years ago when Stephen Bachop

scored a tiy in the last minute to clinch a 21-16 victory. That success, at Eden Park, enabled Canterbury to share the series with Auckland.
