Moore’s Greek mission fails

NZPA London The Minister of External Relations and Trade, Mr Moore, has failed to budge the Greek Government over their opposition to New Zealand’s $BOO million trade deal with Europe. Mr Moore flew to Athens for talks with the Agricultural Minister, Mr Dimas, and the Deputy Foreign Minister, Mr Papoulis, after Greece surprisingly blocked approval of the butter part of the lamb/butter package at the Farm Ministers’ meeting in July. But after meetings lasting more than two hours, Mr Moore said the Greeks were unlikely to agree to

the deal going ahead while they remained unhappy with the internal sheep meat regime proposals. “As far as the Greeks are concerned the two are linked,” Mr Moore said. “They are unhappy with aspects of the internal regime and until they get satisfaction from that they are not willing to support the New Zealand package. The package is due to come up again at the next Farm Ministers’ meeting in Brussels in September when agreement of all 12 European Economic Community countries is needed for the deal to go through.
