Top hockey teams progress

KEVIN TUTTY

Auckland in pool A, and Canterbury and Hawke’s Bay in pool B have qualified for tomorrow’s semifinals in the Premier Trophy section at the ANZ Bank national women’s hockey tournament being played at Porritt Park.

All three teams won their second games yesterday to secure their semi-final positions. Canterbury and Hawke’s Bay will meet today to decide which team wins the pool. On the strength of previous results this season it should be a comfortable win for Canterbury. Auckland virtually assured itself of first place in its pool when it beat its main rival, Otago, 3-1. Otago will play the defending champion, Waikato, today, and should have little trouble winning that game to

gain the second semi-final place in its pool.

Canterbury beat Northland, 5-0, yesterday and has yet to concede a goal at the tournament. Hawke’s Bay, by contrast, had to battle earnestly against North Shore A and it was not until seven minutes from fulltime that Trudy Kilkolly scored for the Bay, to break the deadlock. Waikato had its first win of the tournament yesterday when it beat Wellington in a game of fluctuating fortunes, 3-2.

As it had in its first game on Monday, Canterbury started confidently. There was urgency about its play but after building a‘3-0 lead in 19 minutes the fluency disappeared. It was not until the final 10 minutes of the game that Canterbury as-

serted itself again

As she has done several times this season, Mary Clinton gave Canterbury early advantage by belting home the first penalty-corner after six minutes. Kate Trolove, in the unaccustomed position of centreforward, completed a good passing movement after 14 minutes and scored a second goal from a pen-alty-corner rebound a minute before the interval. The other firsthalf goal was scored by Maree Flannery who exchanged a couple of passes with Sue Duggan in the circle before firing the ball wide of the goalkeeper. The final Canterbury goal came two minutes from the end when Chris Arthur converted a penalty stroke. Results, page 36
