Trackwork

Woodville

Woodville correspondent

Woodville horses have won 16 races already this season, more are expected at the Poverty Bay Turf Club's meeting today, and the success rate should continue into September. There could be a strong representation at Wanganui on Saturday, the likes of Fire Commander, Suzy Harbour, Barnum, Macho Comacho and Yankee Zephyr galloping soundly in training at Woodviille yesterday morning. Fast work took place on the inside grass, which was cutting out. Macho Comacho and Yankee Zephyr worked well over 1000 metres in 1 minute 3 seconds, the 600 m in 37.6. Macho Comacho was so superior at Levin that he was a little unlucky to be relegated, but he will get another chance if he strikes reasonably firm conditions. Phillip Mercer will ride him. Yankee Zephyr is forward to resume.

Fire Commander and Ash Valley ran 600 m in 38. Fire Commander made a big impression in his winning New Plymouth debut and will line up at Wanganui if the track is not too wet. Otherwise he may go again to New Plymouth. Barnum, Immunize and a Pevero gelding recorded 1:5.2 for 1000 m, the 600 m in 38.4. Barnum scored easily at Levin last time out. No Value ran .1200 in 1:27.8, the 600 m in 42. She may contest the steeplechase at the Wanganui Jockey Club’s meeting on Saturday. A possible race rival. Chimeric, galloped with Honey Boy over 1200 m in 1:27.2, the 600 m in 43.2. Kikkoman ran 600 m in 38, while Logistical required 38.2. They are in the early stages of a new campaign and both should show good middle-distance form for Bruce Marsh this season.

Go Bush looked to have taken no harm from his firstup Wanganui race when he galloped 800 m in 51, the last 600 m in 37.6.

Diamantino, unlucky when third at Wanganui last week, galloped comfortably but still ran his final 1000 m in 1:2.3, the 600 m in 37.3. He has never been better. Sir Nova

and Master Avon galloped 1000 m in 1:3.7, the 600 m in 38.7.

Suzy Harbour, a middledistance chance at Wanganui, galloped with Platinum Ring over 1200 m in 1:22.6, the last 600 m in 40.6. Open Wallet and Long Romance strode over 1000 m in 1:4.4, the last 600 m in 39.5.

Kentucky Sunset was given light work and has come back in top order. He won four races last season, then had an operation to remove chips from his fetlock joints. Awapuni Awapuni correspondent It’s crunch time for Lomondy at the Wanganui Jockey Club’s meeting on Saturday, as “Big Joe” warms up for a spring campaign, when he contests the Trust Bank 1600, the feature race on the second day of the club’s programme.

Lomondy worked well at Awapuni yesterday morning and Noel Sales is delighted with the way the nine-year-old has come up in this preparation. He expects Lomondy to run a good race at Wanganui but does not expect miracles at this stage. Lomondy, which has not raced for two years, ran 1200 m on a soft course proper with Golden Sealord. They took 1:22, the last 600 m in 41. Golden Sealord is another resuming at Wanganui after an enforced layoff of 18 months.

St Alydar has trained on since his brilliant late finishing burst at Levin and he looks set for a big effort over 2000 m at Wanganui, a course where he won his maiden race last season. He ran freely over 1000 m with Zargrit, the last 600 m in 41 being the fastest part of the gallop. Hine Kaha, impressive at the Foxton trials last week, showed her fitness for the Calgue when she ran 800 m in 55, the last 600 m in 41 and she was never at top. She is in good order for a fresh start and won’t be far away. Cuivre, racing at Wanganui and in with a chance, completed 800 m in 56, the last 60®n in 40. Further rain wogld do her prospects no harm.
