Nuclear stance
Sir,—For too long the great lie that A.N.Z.U.S. is a “nuclear alliance” has been promoted in this country by fanatical elements. It is time to recognise its true origin in the K.G.B. propaganda machine which sought to establish Soviet nuclear blackmail through deployment of SS--20 missiles in Europe. Thanks to N.A.T.O.’s refusal to be intimidated, we have a genuine reduction of international tensions, a real move towards nuclear disar-
mament and hope in Eastern Europe. New Zealand’s withdrawal from A.N.Z.U.S., if anything, hindered this process. Nuclear weaponry never did have any relevance to A.N.Z.U.S. and it has even less today. Return to A.N.Z.U.S. is a return to collective security that alone can ensure peace — an ideal for which so many of my friends and contemporaries died. Opponents of A.N.Z.U.S. desecrate their memory. — Yours, etc., JOHN PALLOT. August 25, 1989.
