No stabbing motive

A man suffered minor wounds in an apparently motiveless stabbing incident in Cathedral Square yesterday morning. The incident, about 8.45 a.m., appeared to be “out of the blue,” said Inspector John Coomber, of the Christchurch police. The victim, aged 34, suffered wounds to one hand and his back when attacked near the men’s toilets. He made his way to the police kiosk to seek help, then was treated at Christchurch Hospital. Mr Coomber said that the police had a couple of suspects they wished to speak to. The attacker was described as a male European, aged about 30, clean-shaven, with short-cut, mousey-coloured hair. He was wearing a green, Army-style, waist-length jacket, faded jeans, and sandshoes, and was possibly carrying a bag over one shoulder.
