Restrictions ‘must go’

PA Wellington The Merchants’ Association has welcomed the prediction New Zealand could attract two million tourists by the year 2000, but warns restrictions on shop trading hours must go if the country is to take advantage of the boom.

The figures were re-

leased by the Tourist and Publicity Department.

The Merchants’ Association’s executive director, Mr Barry Purdy, said if New Zealand was to become a mecca for the international tourist it had to behave accordingly.

“It is no use having a wealthy Japanese with

“If all New Zealand is to benefit from the boom our entrepreneurs must be free to operate when the tourist and shopper wants.
