Drag strip likely

KAY FORRESTER
The Cass Street racers will have their own drag strip if the Christchurch City Council agrees to spend about $20,000 to create one for them on Railways land. The works and traffic committee chairman, Cr Ron Wright, said yesterday that the corporation had a suitable site in Ensors Road, Opawa. The racers had been told about the site and seemed
happy with it, he said. The money would be needed to lay a concrete slab for racing ($15,000 to $17,000) and for fencing ($5000) to make the area secure.
“There’s quite a bit of fill down there we can use to make an embankment,” Cr Wright said.
He plans to meet the racers in the Stratford Lounge, Ferry Road, at 10 p.m. on September 8 to let them know about progress.
