School old boy back to sketch

By

RICHARD CRESSWELL

The Wellington architect and former Mayor, Sir Michael Fowler, will be sketching Christ’s College buildings this week for postcards. Sir Michael, a college old boy, said tourists often asked for school souvenirs. “But there was not much to show them, so I suggested the school get a series of sketches done for postcards.” Sir Michael, who arrived in Christchurch last Friday, has until this week-end to do 14 sketches. “I’m trying to do two a day. I don’t know how many they want; perhaps they’ll reject them all,” he said. The first two days had been “a bit damp,” and had made the sketching difficult, he said. Sir Michael attended the school during World War 11. “I arrived here aged 13 totally ignorant about what to expect, but I enjoyed it.” Sir Michael said his favourite building in the grounds was the Hare Memorial Library. “It is architecture at its best,” he said.
