Fur sale disaster
PA Dunedin A 10 per cent clearance at the Dunedin fur auction on Friday was described as “quite disastrous” by the Kiwi Fur Company’s fur manager, Mr Bob Charlton. “The market just didn’t seem to be there,” he said. The second sale of the 1989-90 season attracted six buyers all representing overseas concerns.
Mr Charlton said most prices offered by the
buyers were “well below expectations,” and were not accepted. “They’ve gone back to their clients, and so we have a wait and see if we can get better prices,” he said. “It’s been very disappointing quite disastrous.” But the lack of sales was not dissimilar to the first sale of the season. “Things are quite bad. Recent prices were barely workable for the trappers,” Mr Charlton said.
