Hijack of ideas claim by hopeful

The Christchurch Action team’s next hijacking of ideas would be adopting the Canterbury United Council’s employment package as its own, an independent Christchurch City Council candidate in the Papanui ward said yesterday. Cr Des King said Mrs Margaret Murray’s team would promote the “work for the dole” scheme as its own.

The package has already been announced by the United Council, which had employed staff to develop it. One of those staff, Mr Philip Donnelly, a regional economist, was a Christchurch Action candidate.

“The proposals are not those of whizz kids in the C.A.T.S. team,” Cr King said.

He warned that Christchurch people should see the proposals as the product of a proven local body system. Mrs Murray said it did not matter which hat she wore — chairman of the United Council, chairman of the Waimairi District Council, leader of Christchurch Action — when promoting the employment package. “It’s a great package, which has the potential to solve unemployment. The Government is interested. I’ll promote it any way, anywhere I can.”
