N.Z. exchange students to return to China

PA Wellington New Zealand students evacuated from Peking at the height of the turmoil there in June could return to China next month. The Government has given the six students, studying under an official China-New Zealand Exchange Scheme more, than 10 years old, the goahead to return to China, Mr Chris Butler, the head of the North Asia divison of the Ministry of Exter-

nal Relations and Trade, said yesterday. The six will be joined by a newly chosen student. Six will study in Peking and one in Nanjing. Mr Butler said though martial law still existed in Peking the students would be safe in foreign student compounds at their universities. The New Zealand embassy would keep in regular touch with them. The students were keen

to complete their studies in China, he said. New Zealand had been in touch with China’s State Education Commission and had also been guided by other countries deciding to send their students back. “One thing that has to be borne in mind is that in all the disruptions of June there was no report at all of any foreigner being seriously hurt and that is pertinent.”
