Kasparov blunders NZPA-Reuter Skelleftea, Sweden The Soviet world champion, Garry Kasparov, blundered when he was in a winning position and had to settle for a draw against a former world champion, Mikhail Tai, in round seven of the World Cup chess tournament. The result left Kasparov sharing first place with two other Soviet grandmasters, Jaan Ehlvest and Valery Salov, both of whom won their matches. Kasparov had a two-pawn advantage over Tai and was cruising towards victory but made a simple mistake as time ran short for both players. He grabbed a third pawn, allowing Tai to win his bishop and an easy draw. The tournament is the final competition in a series in which 16 of the world’s top players are playing each other. Brazil on rampage NZPA-Reuter Rio de Janeiro Brazil — with the international striker, Careca, scoring four goals — put on one of its finest performances for some time yesterday to crush Venezuela, 6-0, in a South American Group three World Cup soccer qualifying match. The three-time world champion, which has never lost a qualifying match or missed the World Cup finals, is now in a comfortable position to win the group in September when it plays second-placed Chile in Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana stadium. In other South American qualifying matches Bolivia beat Peru, 2-1, in the first match of Group one and two goals by the Colombian striker, Iguaran, gave his country a 2-0 victory over Ecuador in the opening match of Group two.
