Study of abuse
Sir,—Your report (August 12) of a Dunedin research team’s claim about identifying potential child abuse appears as yet another instance of blaming the mother. Presumably, these children have two parents, yet the report never mentions the father. If, as is often the case, the father has already deserted the child, then surely that is a factor of importance. If the father is still present in the family, then surely he also has responsibility. If the father is the abuser, then his part is even more evident. Yet the nine-point check list for predicting child abuse or neglect mentions the mother eight times and the father not once. This reinforces the outdated assumption that child rearing has nothing to do with the male sex and places more guilt on the already overburdened female parent. — Yours, etc.,
