Third cycling trophy for Auckland Grammar
PA Levin Auckland Grammar retained the Sir Bernard Fergusson cycling trophy winning for the third year in a row at Levin yesterday. Auckland Grammar has won the trophy six times since 1980 and by winning yesterday stamped its total dominance on the annual competition. Grammar’s time was 22
minutes and 45 seconds, just short of the 21.35 record. Linwood High School was second in the 16km open road time trial in a time of 23.29, 54 seconds behind Grammar. Another South Island team, Timaru Boys’ High School, came third to win the bronze medal in a time of 23-42. Four teams came up from the South Island for the successful competition being
placed second, third, fourth and seventh. Eight female teams contested the Watts Trophy this year — up from five last year. Epsom Girls’ College took the trophy in a time of 26.37. Diocesan School for Girls came second and Wanganui Girls’ College was third. J. Simmonds, from Marlborough, won the A. J. Drake Trophy and D. Kinniston won the Joli Cup.
