World side wins first match
NZPA-AP Durban The Australian winger lan Williams scored two tries on Saturday as the World XV rugby side powered to a 33-20 victory over Natal Province in the first match of their controversial tour to celebrate the centenary of the South African Rugby Board. The visitors scored five tries in all — two by Williams, and one each by the Wallaby vice-captain, Bill
Campbell, Keith Robertson, of Scotland and Peter Winterbottom, of England. Denis Charvet, of France, converted all five tries and scored a penalty. Natal, placed fourth in South Africa’s premier eightteam league, trailed, 15-3, at half-time but held its own in the second half, scoring three tries. The international team face tougher competition on the tour, approved by the
International Rugby Board, when they play the Springboks in two upcoming matches and one against Northern Transvaal, the undefeated leader in the provincial league. Earlier police arrested 15 protesters outside the World XV’s Durban hotel. Just hours before the match was due to start police swooped on white and black protesters holding placards urging the players to leave
South Africa. Scorers: World XV: lan Williams Bill Campbell, Peter Winterbottom, Keith Robertson, tries. Denis Charvet, five conversions, penalty goal. Natal: David Spence, Dick Muir, tries. Joel Stransky, conversion. Stransky penalty. Hugh Reece-Edwards drop goal. Referee: Fransie Muller (South Africa).
