Saudis reject Aust. sheep

NZPA-AFP-Reuter Manama

Saudi authorities refused entry to a new shipment of Australian sheep yesterday, port officials in the Gulf said, as an Australian Government delegation arrived in the kingdom to discuss the problem. Agence France-Presse reports that authorities at Dammam on the eastern coast of Saudi Arabia rejected 68,000 live sheep, complaining that they

were infected with sheep pox. It was the fourth time that Saudi authorities turned back shipments of Australian sheep since July on the ground that they were diseased, bringing the number of sheep rejected to 293,500. Informed sources in the kingdom said meanwhile that the Australian delegation arrived yesterday and was expected to spend a few days in Saudi Arabia before visiting other Gulf States.

The delegation, sent by Australia’s Primary Industries and Energy Minister, John Kerin, will discuss with Saudi officials what must be done to assure them of the animals’ health. The sheep might have been banned for commercial reasons or because of faulty Saudi testing techniques, according to Australian officials, who added that the sheep passed health checks when diverted to other Middle East countries.
