‘Naming rights’ to Fletchers?

Wellington reporter

The Government will have to consider giving Fletcher Challenge naming rights to New Zealand if they acquire any more State assets, according to the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Bolger. Having acquired the Rural Bank Fletcher Challenge was now poised to gain the dominant share of all key State assets sold by the Labour Government, he said. Fletcher Challenge had already bought Petrocorp and the Rural Bank, was fighting to gain New Zealand Steel, and would be a

main contender for State forests. “The Government has a duty to explain to farmers why it preferred the Fletcher Challenge bid for the Rural Bank to a broadly similar deal offered by a farmer-led consortium,” Mr Bolger said.

He hoped the subsequent arrangements for shareholding in the Rural Bank would provide for a significant involvement by farmers.

There should also be a strong independent voice for farmers on the new Rural Bank board.
