Souths wins minor premiership
PA Sydney South Sydney clinched Sydney rugby league’s minor premiership with a heart-stopping 8-4 win over St George yesterday. With one round robin game to go before the top five teams enter the finals series, South Sydney is four points clear of second-placed Penrith. Souths, who has lost only three matches this season, was outplayed for
the first 70 minutes and did not get on the scoreboard until the final 10 minutes. St George was leading, 4-0, through two Ricky Walford penalties, when the Souths replacement forward, Mark Ellison, pegged back two points with a penalty. With two minutes remaining Ellison crossed over for the winning try, which he converted. The other teams left
contesting a place in the grand final are Balmain on 27 points and Canberra, Brisbane and Cronulla, each on 26 points. Balmain’s late season charge up the ladder was halted on Saturday, when an inspired Manly held the Tigers to a 10-10 draw. Balmain, with the Kiwi halfback, Gary Freeman, working tirelessly, was perhaps lucky to have escaped with that result
considering Manly had two tries disallowed. The Tigers have easily the toughest assignment of next week’s final round in the regular season, with a clash against Penrith. Friday and Saturday results: Gold Coast 8, Cronulla 4; Manly 10, Balmain 10. Yesterday: South Sydney 8, St George 4; Eastern Suburbs 34, Canterbury 2; Newcastle Knights 14, North Sydney 1; Penrith 37, Western Suburbs 0.
