Political rows
Sir, —With all the political infighting in the Labour Government, and leadership change, no wonder the near-dormant North Island volcano started letting off steam and there was a significant earthquake towards Wellington. The elements are telling us something, and I think it is that New Zealanders have had a gutsful of the destabilising, damaging, political shambles which even seems to be defeating this Government’s ability to restore confidence in time for it to be re-elected. In my last letter I accurately predicted the political polls would close and, unless National sharpens up, the Government, just by being in power, has great opportunity to woo the voters in the year ahead. It is appalling that so many New Zealanders need Government welfare assistance. Even 1987 statistics show that there are as many welfare beneficiaries .as self-employed people, so the percentage of people needing help must by now be close to overtaking the number of people actually able to work. —Yours, etc., W. J. C. ROYDS. August 10, 1989.
