Southpower to reopen shop

Electrical appliances will again be on sale from Southpower’s Manchester Street showroom, three years after the Christchurch City Council decided that the then M.E.D. had no place in appliance retailing. Southpower was formed, earlier this year as a joint venture between the M.E.D. and the Central Canterbury Electric Power Board. It had had to form a joint policy on retailing, having inherited the M.E.D.’s “advisory” showroom, along with the
C.C.E.P.B.’s four appliance retail stores in Hornby, Leeston, Darfield, and Akaroa. The decision was to reopen the showroom as a shop, said the managing director of Southpower, Mr Chris Laurie. “We see the concept of retailing as an important' part of our over-all marketing strategy to help increase sales of electricity,” he said. Mr Laurie said Southpower had to be commercially viable. When it would reopen as a shop had not yet been decided, he said.
