N.Z. Salmon award

By

PENNY MAHY

The New Zealand Salmon Company has won an Export Commendation Award from the Trade Development Board.

The award, for innovation in establishing overseas markets for New Zealand salmon and horticultural products, is the company’s first since it was listed on the Stock Exchange in 1983. The managing director, Mr Peter Townsend, said he was pleased the Company’s work in developing New Zealand’s natural resources had been recognised. In spite of losses of $1.5 million last year because of an algae bloom which killed caged salmon at Stewart Island, Mr Townsend said the company now had a S2SM turnover. New Zealand Salmon owns a 50 per cent shareholding in a Chilean company, Aquacultivos, which farms salmon and salmon trout. He said there had been a heavy orientation on research and development which was only now beginning to yield results.

Other award-winning Christchurch companies were M.M. Cables New Zealand and the Unisys Line Development Centre.

M.M. Cables’ award was given for its introduction of a new management style (value added management). The training facilitator for the company, Mr Peter Johnston, said it had improved productivity and company efficiency. The system, which incorporates Japanese management strategies, was unlike typical New Zealand management styles and focused on the creative involvement of all employees.

Unisys Line has won other export awards for marketing its software overseas in the past.

The certificates will be officially presented by Mr Philip Burdon, the Opposition spokesman on trade and industry on September 8. The Dunedin company, Pascal Prints and Ceramics, won an award for export sales of more than $28,000 in its first year of exporting ceramic “happy hens.” Award-winning Auckland companies included Jade Travel, New Zealand Wool Furnishings and Watpa Enterprises. Amlamco Meats of Wanganui also received an award for establishing a niche market for gourmet cuts of lamb in Canada and the Netherlands.
