ICE SKATING A strong contingent of ice skaters converged on Queenstown last week-end for the South Island championships. The men’s entries were doubled from previous years and the lower grades also attracted considerable interest.

The competition was tight with the nationals just three weeks away, and the skaters fine tuned their performances. the Centaurus club from Christchurch took the honours by winning the Kiwi Lager Trophy easily, and Gore and Alexandra were second and third.

Peter Watts (Centaurus) and Brent McGrath (Centaurus) had an intense tussle for first place in the junior men’s competition and the result was eventually decided in the freeskating programme. McGrath took the title.

RUGBY The final round of the secondary schools’ premier rugby competition was played last week-end. With Shirley Boys’ High School already having won the title, most interest was in the game between St

Bede’s College and Christchurch Boys’ High School to determine second place. Playing on its home ground, St Bede’s avenged its first round loss and came away in the latter stages of the game to win 16-3. This gave St Bede’s the distinction of not losing a game in the second round of competition, which included all the traditional inter-school games. Results:

St Bede’s College 16 (R. Allison, D. Brown, tries; A. Lawson, penalty goal, dropped goal; A. Lawry, conversion) beat Christchurch Boys’ High School 3 (J. Mooar, penalty goal). Christ’s College 46 (T. Matson, 5, G. Fuller, 2, C. Judd, T. Stronach, tries; Fuller, four conversions, Stronach, conversion) beat St Thomas’ College 3 (G. Muir, penalty goal). Burnside High School 13 (C. Ford, M. Smith, tries; Smith, conversion, penalty goal) beat St Andrew’s College 9 (D. Mcßreen, three penalty goals).

Christ’s 12 4 — 8 21 St Thomas’ 12 1 — 11 6 Meanwhile the division one championship was decided when the Christchurch Boys’ High School 2nd XV defeated the St Bede’s 2nd XV, 6-0. TENNIS Avonhead and Shirley took an early lead after the first round of the Fright Aubrey preseason indoor tennis competition at the Indoor Tennis Centre on Sunday evening. Shirley was in devastating forms with its total senior complement, while Avonhead had an easier assignment as Elmwood defaulted two hours before the competition started. “It was a lack of organization,” said Vernon Aubrey, an

Avonhead team member. “They (Elmwood) said they would have no trouble getting a team and we left the ball in their court. Then we got the late notice, which was a bit annoying.” Shirley won all four of its doubles matches against Edgeware to notch a 4-0 win, but it was pushed against the combination of Michael Smith and Scott Perkins, who chased Hamish and Julian Faulls to a tiebreaker.

Te Kura sneaked in against Cashmere, 5 sets to 4. Michael Young, usually an Avonhead player, settled into the Cashmere ranks well for the contest. Te Kura had the benefit of Andrew Batie, who is home from university life in the United States for a holiday. Batie and Robinson were surprisingly upset by Andrew Bruce and Peter Terrace, 6-3, 3-6, 6-8 (tie-break). Results.— Te Kura 5 sets, Cashmere 4 sets M. Purcell and J. O’Malley lost to A. Bruce and P. Terrace,

ROLLER HOCKEY The Bullets captain, Phillip Denovan, called his depleted team from the floor in a sensational end to the BIC South Island roller hockey league match against Souths at the Skate Station last week-end. Souths thus recorded its first win in the league, being awarded the match, 7-2. When Denovan called his team off Bullets was down to its keeper and two field players after two players had been dismissed. One of the dismissed players was Denovan himself, originally sent to the sinbin for two minutes for what others saw as a minor offence. An upset Denovan then shaped up to hit the ball at the referee, Michelle Lester, who pulled out the red card.

The Bullets vice-captain, Barry Low, pleaded with the referee to change her mind, was denied and after saying something to the official he, too, received his marching orders.

Bullets carried on for a time, but Denovan cried enough after Souths had scored three quick goals. Scoring details:

Souths 7: B. Head 3, A. McDougall 2, J. Campbell 2. Bullets 2: P. Denovan 2.

CYCLING Cold and windy conditions prevailed in Dunedin on Sunday for the open novice 77km four stage, tour cycle race which attracted a strong entry from throughout the South Island. Craig Denny (Hornby) and Glen Thomson (Dunedin) lapped the field in the 30 lap, 27km stage three criterium, and this set them up for the major tour honours. A fine 10 minutes 2 seconds ride in the 6km last stage time trial, confirmed Thomson as the tour winner with Denny second at 51 seconds ahead of Jason Vercoe (Timaru) and Gregory Scott (Woolston). Earlier there had been some good performances from Canterbury riders with Mark Ogle (Mairehau) winning the 24km first stage whilst Gregor Scott won the second hilly 20km stage on his own after a breakaway. Michael Walford (Mairehau) won the B grade section of the tour - Dunedin open novice 77km four stage, tour, general classification: Glen Thomson (Dunedin) 2 hrs 29 mins 30s, 1; Craig Denny (Hornby) at 51s, 2; Jason Vercoe (Timaru) at’ 1 min 435, 3; Gregory Scott (Woolston) at 2 mins 10s, 4. ICE HOCKEY Penalties played a vital role in the final of the New Zealand junior ice hockey championships between Canterbury and Auckland last week-end. Auckland won the clash, 7-4, but there were several occasions when Canterbury failed to slot penalties which the Auckland side conceded. By comparison, Auckland took its chances well and scored two of its goals by power play. Auckland notched a goal when Canterbury had one of its players lying injured on the ice awaiting first aid. Finn Sandberg (Canterbury) was named the top goal-keeper for the tournament, while Auckland’s captain, Darsy Wynnychuc, collected honours for the most valuable player. Canterbury squared off against Southern in the semifinal and its fitness was the deciding factor. Southern held Canterbury in the early stages, but half-way through the second period Canterbury sprinted ahead and eventually won the encounter, 9-2, CHESS Results from the Canterbury Chess Club championship (first named player had white).
