Praise from expert
The work being done by the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canterbury has been praised by an international expert. Professor lan McDonald, professor of Clinical Neurology at the London Institute of Neurology told the society in an address last year that sufferers in Christchurch were better off in terms of treatment than those in larger centres anywhere in the world.
“The reason for that is the size of the community and the obviously ex-
cellent relations between the skilled and dedicated here in the society and the neurological and assessment teams in the hospital,” Professor McDonald said. “I do not know of anywhere else where a patient as soon as they are diagnosed can have contact with professionals who can take them on and educate them about the disease and then deal with the
symptoms as they arise,” Professor McDonald said.
