Sale of assets
Sir,—Here we are living in Godzone. The cost of living continues to escalate as we support our ever-burdened social system. The Government sells assets to Australia which, in turn, sells the same assets to Japan. We trade present and future raw materials for Japanese cars now; trading our national forests to the same people, and just as they come on tap. New Zealand will be owned by multi-national companies. Telecom, a monopoly, although Government-owned, makes enormous profits to purchase designer furniture from Italy. We talk of buying frigates, but they will not be fast enough to protect our economic fishing zones. Almost every night I see another "city” south of the peninsula; joint-venture squid fishing. Is fish cheap in New Zealand? No. GST helps send food prices soaring. It is madness selling ever more scarce raw materials overseas with minimal internal input or earnings; one-off trades. What of the future? — Yours, etc., E. C. ELLIS. August 5, 1989.
