Grey power

Sir,—l cannot agree with Grace Forbes (August 4). Present wage earners are contributing to their superannuation, as did the present pensioners in their day. Many will recall the wage “stamps.” All pensioners are pre-war, have come through the great depression and learnt thrift as a necessity. When Social Security was introduced it specified security and freedom from fear and want. Pensions were means-tested and many concessions were available to the elderly. Sir Robert Muldoon’s Government phased out the oldage pension and gave national superannuation to all over 60 years, whether they were wage earners or whatever their income. Superannuation should be

given only on retirement after the age of 60. Room at the bottom is then made for another person to be employed. — Yours, etc., •

M. A. HOGAN. August 6, 1989.
