East and West
Sir,—“My enemy’s enemy will be my friend” is an old adage and it explains the attempts by the United States to keep Russia and China at loggerheads. The dangerous miscalculation is now apparent. Sino-Soviet trade has reached S3B. Russia is assisting China to build up her nuclear power, with promises of massive ' military arms sales. A major rail line linking the two communist giants is under construction. Warnings of the "Yellow Peril” may yet prove an accurate prophec. Meanwhile, Mr Gorbachev, with the help of peace groups, is neutralising Western Europe and N.A.T.0., while the Soviet military strength continues to grow. The weapons they are discarding are old and obsolete. Replacements are superior up-to-date missiles and modern nuclear submarines. Western nations have contributed to this menace with vast sums and military aid. Is it blind madness or a calculated treacherous scheme for the eventual overthrow of democracy?—Yours, etc.,
- BILL BARRY. August 9, 1989.
