Waterfront
Sir,—Many times recently I have heard the president of Federated Farmers say the Waterfront Industry Commission must go. He is going to get his wish at the end of September, but I think he will regret it. The Waterfront Industry Commission is probably the most efficient administrative body in the country bn a ratio of administrators to workers in a very complex industry. If the farmers think that by breaking the watersiders’ and seamen’s unions they will get cheaper freight rates they are living in dreamland. When Stan Rodger handed over the Shipping Corporation to the Vestey Group, with it went the 18 per cent of the freight to Europe which was New Zealand’s share in the Conference lines. We are back to the old days of New Zealand’s lifeline in the hands of overseas shipping monopolies. — Yours, etc., L. WELLS. August 9, 1989.
