N.Z. ‘can build own ship’

A Christchurch-based peace group says New Zealand industry should resist becoming part of an Australian-dominated defence industry through the Anzac frigates project. The Nuclear Free Peacemaking Association says New Zealand can build its own, smaller, blue water navy ships and create an industry with
export potential. The group’s secretary, Mr Larry Ross, has taken issue with remarks by the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association, which supports the frigates project because of job creation and investment in the region. I Mr Rose said if New Zealand is to remain nuclear-free and inden-
pendent, it must refuse the Anzac frigate deal, saying because Australia is linked to American strategies, the deal would be a backdoor return to A.N.Z.U.S. Mr Ross said his group feels that smaller, cheaper, ships can be built in New Zealand, creating more jobs and offering export potential. ,i
