Cricket drawn NZPA London The New Zealand Youth cricket team had the better of its drawn three-day match against the National Association of Young Cricketers which ended at Oxford yesterday. Left a target of 229 to win in 49 overs, the association side was struggling at the end of the match, at 126 for five. Trailing by 38 runs in the first innings, New Zealand made a solid 266 in its second innings, with useful contributions right down the order. The seamer, Chris Cairns, and the left-arm spinner, Matthew Hart, shared the honours with the ball in the English side’s first innings. Scores:— New Zealand 182 and 266 (M. Hart 58, B. Pocock 39, D. Mills 38 not out, L. Howell 30; M. Doidge 5/85, D. Cork 3/68) drew with National Association of Young Cricketers 220 (J. Goldthorp 92; C. Cairns 5/40, Hart 3/33) and 126/5 (T. Radford 31 not out, R. Warren 31; M. Richardson 2/23). Phillips wins golf PA Auckland Martin Phillips squelched his way to victory in the Auckland matchplay golf championship at Titirangi yesterday. The 20-yeaf-old Waitakiri golfer beat 17-year-old Saali Herewini (Whangarei) 2 and 1 in the final after surviving putting problems half-way through the round when the persistent rain threatened to swamp the greens. In the semi-finals Phillips beat P. Aickin (Remuera) 3 and 2 while Herewini beat C. Newman (Huapai) 2 and 1. N.Z. bowlers lose PA Wellington The New Zealand Emerging Players bowling team lost, 3-1, when it played Australia’s Gold Coast in Queensland yesterday. Taranaki’s Brian Baldwin recovered well in the singles after being well down early on to tie the match at 22-22, before losing by a narrow margin. Results: — Singles: Brian Baldwin (Taranaki) lost to Gil Steinhardt, 22-25. Pairs: Geoff Hawkin (Taranaki) and Graham Stanley (Canterbury) lost to Keith Godbold and Tom Cummins, 17-19. Triples: Paul Wilton (Hawke’s Bay), Brian Baldwin (Taranaki), Peter Shaw (Manawatu) lost to Robbie Dobbins, Gil Steinhardt, Graham Richards, 11-23. Fours: Paul Wilton, Geoff Hawkin, Graham Stanley, Peter Shaw beat Keith Godbold, Robbie Dobbins, Graham Richards, Tom Cummins, 20-17. Gilbert wins tennis NZPA-Reuter Livingston, New Jersey After a nine-hour rain delay, the second seed, Brad Gilbert — playing near perfect tennis — overwhelmed the fourth seed, Jim Courier, 6-2, 6-0, in the semi-finals of the 5U5125.000 ($NZ211,700) Grand Prix tournament yesterday. In the other semi-final, Jason Stoltenberg, of Australia, beat Chris Bailey, of England, 6-4, 6-3. Gilbert, ranked No. 9 in the world, outplayed his fellow American Courier, ranked No. 36, throughout their 66minute match. “I hammered him, I just hammered him in all phases of the game,” Gilbert said.
