Penalty warning delivered

PA Wellington Employers who refuse to post PAYE deductions to Inland Revenue because post-paid envelopes are no longer supplied by the department are warned their actions may backfire. The revenue assessments director, Mr Alan Foubister, said the law required employers who deducted PAYE from employees to get the deductions to the department by the twentieth or the

following month. “If they don’t pay by (that) date it will incur the late payment penalty.” A Petone manufacturing company has notified the department it will have the returns available at its offices two days before they are due, and if the department fails to uplift them the returns will be forwarded for payment on delivery.

The director of Ebbett Automation, Ltd, Mr

Graeme Ebbett, said direct crediting would be an acceptable alternative, if the bank fees were paid by the department.

Mr Foubister said direct crediting was being investigated by the department. It could not be used yet, however, as more information from the employer had to accompany the payments than was possible through the preset system.
