Art exceeds expectations
PA Auckland An auction of 34 paintings donated by the late Mr James Tannock Mackelvie fetched high prices last week, surpassing estimates by 400 per cent.
The auctioneer, Mr Peter Webb, of Auckland, said the prices outstripped the London sales of some of the works, and raised
$500,000 for the vendor, the City of Auckland. “The first lot was estimated to sell for $6OOO to $7OOO but went for $38,000. The rest of the night took off from there,” Mr Webb said. Mr Mackelvie permanently lent a large collection of art to the city and the 34 paintings chosen
for the auction were the lesser lights of the collection, Mr Webb said. Buyers arrived from London and Australia to compete for the works. The top price was $lOO,OOO for a Thomas Gotch oil, “The Birthday.”
