Celebrities to help charity
Two teams of celebrity debaters, including Television New Zealand’s Judith Kirk and Denis Welsh of the "Listener,” will argue for the benefit of the Crippled Children Society in Christchurch this week. One team of four men and one of four women will debate the topic “that we would rather be Groucho than Macho” in the James Hay Theatre at the Town Hall on Wednesday at 8 p.m.
The debate will be chaired by Ms Vicki Buck.
The men’s team will take the affirmative. The team is led by Jim Hopkins, with John King of the “Evening Post” in Wellington, Denis Welch, and Michael Macaskill from the University of
Canterbury. The women’s team will be led by the entertainer Janice Gray, with Judith Kirk, the television journalist Kerry Woodham, and a leading high school debater, Imogen Dickie from St Margaret's College.
A spokesman for the society. Mr Mike O’Neill, said the debaters would give their services free.
Four of the debaters were from outside Christchurch, and Ansett New Zealand and the Elms Hotel had donated transport and accommodation, he said.
Tickets were $l2 for adults and $6 for students, with all proceeds going to the Canterbury branch of the Crippled Children Society, he said.
