Rebel Skipper shows fitness
Rebel Skipper again showed his fitness for early season engagements by leading throughout the C 4 and faster free-for-all at the harness racing trials at Ashburton last Thursday. Also a winner at the recent Timaru trials, the Bill s Brother gelding reeled off his closing 800 metres in a slick 56.8 seconds on Thursday for trainer Tony Soal, holding out the solid finish of the Cup-class mare, Frangelico, by 1% lengths. Bardolino also looked in forward order by finishing a useful third half a length away. The Plat du Jour gelding wasn’t asked to quicken after being handy throughout and tracked the winner for much of the run home.
Great Provider, which looks in fine trim for the New Zealand Metropolitan Club’s National meeting on Saturday week, outfinished his stablemate, Noodlum’s Fella, in the Cl and faster mobile pace, the leaders sprinting in over their last 800 m in 58.5 and 400 m in, 27.1.
Lady Bonnie, a four-year-old Stampede mare in Gerald McCormick’s Ashburton team, gave a smart front-running performance to win her 2400 m qualifying pace from a stand by seven lengths in 3:10.7. She gave nothing else a chance over her last 800 m in 58.2 and 400 m in 28.9, but Flashing By, a six-year-old half-brother by Lord Module to Jay Ardee in Lorraine Grant’s Ashburton team, did well for second in 3:12.1 afffcr breaking early.
