Selwyn in semi-finals
Harewood will meet High School Old Boys and Pegasus will play Selwyn in the semifinals of the Athol McCrorie Trophy premier men’s hockey competition. Selwyn sneaked into the semi-finals at the expense of Redcliffs when it managed to hold Harewood to a 1-1 draw in pool B on Saturday, and yesterday in pool A Old Boys advanced when it beat Sydenham 3-1.
. University, seeded second in its pool, had to beat Pegasus yesterday to have a chance of a place in the semi-finals but it lost 1-0 to the championship titleholder. Final points in the pools were:
Pool A.—Pegasus 6, Old Boys 4, University 2, Sydenham 0. Pool B.—Harewood 5, Selwyn 4, Redcliffs 3, Woolston 0.
John Radovonich scored the only goal for Pegasus
early in the first-half against University last evening. Play for the remainder of the game moved back and forth with both teams piecing together good moves. Pegasus created more scoring opportunities. Its forwards were swift to exploit gaps in the mid-field but the University deep defence was solid. University created several scoring chances too but was unable to convert them.
Old Boys built a 3-0 lead at the interval against Sydenham. Kerry Thomas scored from a penalty-corner and Christian Orchard and Anthony Thomas scored after concerted attacks.
The Old Boys effort slipped in the second-half and Sydenham scored from a penalty stroke converted by John Woods. Redcliffs estimated before it played Woolston on Saturday that it would have to win
by three clear goals to earn a place in the semi-finals — provided Harewood beat Selwyn.
Redcliffs had that threegoal margin by half-time. Jeremy Paynter, Paul Mahoney and Nick Tapper scored and early in the second-half Jason Watkins extended the lead to four. Greg Rhodes got a goal back for Woolston but Redcliffs had achieved its aim and sat back to watch Harewood play Selwyn. Redcliffs’ hopes soon waned. Selwyn scored early and Harewood struggled to find something like its best form and it was well into the second-half before it snatched the equaliser.
Selwyn continued to pressure the Harewood defence in the final quarter and Harewood was lucky to keep its unbeaten record this season intact.
