Harewood held to golf draw
The defending champion, Harewood, was held to a 4-4 draw by Coringa in the opening round of the Woodward Cup match play men’s club golf competition at Coringa yesterday.
In an exciting contest three matches went to the final hole.
Harewood’s No. 1, Mark Street, finished well to beat Neville Brightwell, two up, but that result was countered at the number two position. To loud cheers from the gallery Coringa’s Jeff Louwman sank a long birdie putt on the sixteenth hole to go two up against Alistair Sidford.
Sidford came back to force the match on to the eighteenth hole. But Louwman played steady golf under pressure to halve the hole and claim the win.
Last year's runner-up, Templeton, had a close battle before dispatching North Canterbury. North Canterbury’s effort to take three games was all the more creditable, considering first it was hit by a number of late defections from its team, and second, Karl Mariu, favoured in the number one spot, was upset by Templeton’s Joe Gantley, four and three. Steven Leech made his Woodward Cup debut in fine style for Templeton with an eight and six victory. In another whitewash, Ross Jones halved two holes, but won all the rest to oust his North Canterbury opponent with seven holes to play. Waitikiri was given a scare in its encounter with Central Canterbury. Though having a history of decisive wins over Central Canterbury in the Woodward Cup Waitikiri was made to fight all the way before it emerged victorious, 4i/ 2 - 3 >/ 2 .
