Harewood struggles

A tenacious Nelson Old Boys’ team made Harewood, of Christchurch, struggle for its 1-0 first-round win in the Adidas national inter-club men’s hockey competition at Blenheim yesterday. Harewood scored early through a Chris Leslie pen-alty-comer and clung to its slender lead for the remainder of the game. Harewood found the dry, bumpy ground at Horton Park difficult to adapt to

after playing club games on artificial turf. Nelson played constructively and forced several pen-alty-comers in the second half, but the Harewood defence held and the forwards and halves contained the ball for long periods in the Nelson half. It was a commendable effort by Nelson. Several of its players had been playing in a representative game between Nelson and Marlborough earlier in the day.
