Retired man dies in sight of goal

PA Auckland The principal of Paeroa College for 13 years, Mr lan Kerr, retired in 1983 with the aim of sailing around the Pacific in his own yacht. He died within sight of completing his lifelong ambition. Mr Kerr, aged 66, and a companion had visited many islands since May and were returning to Auckland when a storm forced them to take shelter in Nagles Bay, Great Barrier Island. It was there that he died aboard his yacht Tranquilio. Mr Kerr had previously

suffered from heart-re-lated illness, and he apparently died of a heart attack. Mr Kerr’s son, Barry, said his family was pleased he achieved his long-held ambition to sail the Pacific in his own boat, but saddened that he died without making it back to tell of his adventures. His father had spent the six years since retiring from the college, building and outfitting the Tranquilio and completing a “dummy run” of his dream trip as crew on another boat
