North refused pension
NZPA-Reuter Washington The United States Navy has said it would abide by a ruling depriving the retired Marine LieutenantColonel Oliver North of his $U522,000-a-year ($38,000) Marine Corps pension because of his conviction in the IranContra affair. The General Accounting Office (G.A.0.), a non-parti-san arm. of Congress, said if North still wanted his pension he would have to sue for it. North, a fired National Security Council staff member, was fined SUSISO,OOO ($257,000) and given a three-year suspended prison sentence on July 6 for crimes committed during the IranContra affair. He played a central role in co-ordinating the secret sale of arms to Iran and the diversion of profits to fund Contra rebels in Nicaragua at a time when Congress had banned such aid.
