Psychiatric cuts opposed

The Christchurch branch of the Schizophrenia Fellowship has sent a petition to the Canterbury Area Health Board to protest against proposed cuts in funding to psychiatric services.

About 250 people signed the petition, which said that any cuts in funding, services or staff would jeopardise the care and quality of life of people with psychiatric illnesses

living in the community. Another protest against health cuts will be made by supporters of Coronation Hospital, which might be closed as a cost-cutting measure. It was decided at a meeting of the supporters to send a second submission to the board, saying it was not acceptable to close the hospital because none of the options for alternative care of the

patients was up to the standard now practised at Coronation.

A spokeswoman for the supporters, Mrs Vel Lomax, said the patients were distressed at the prospect of leaving the hospital. Although they were hospital patients requiring 24hour care, Coronation was home for many of them, with some having been there 15 to 20 years.
