$US risk presented

NZPA-Reuter London The United States dollar’s strength, if sustained, might aggravate inflation in the world’s major economies, the Bank of England said in its Quarterly Bulletin. It noted clear signs of an emerging slowdown in North America.

“If sustained near recent peaks, the level of the dollar would tend to reinforce this pattern of growth. Less benignly it might also tend to put some upward pressure on inflation in the major economies as a group.” Many commodities were priced in dollars and this would increase the import bills of America’s trading partners.
