Boycott unlikely—Nigeria
PA Auckland A boycott of next year’s Commonwealth Games by African countries is unlikely, the Nigerian Foreign Affairs Minister, Major-General Ike Nwachukwu, said yesterday. “I believe the Games must go on,” he told a press conference at the Games headquarters in Auckland. “I don’t believe there is going to be a boycott.” General Nwachukwu, who is on
a three-day visit to New Zealand after attending a meeting of Commonwealth Foreign Ministers in Canberra, said African countries condemned any sporting contact with South Africa, be it sanctioned or otherwise. However, he said Nigeria had faith in the Commonwealth and that the spirit of the Games should be kept alive. “Africans appreciate a good deal the support New Zealand is
giving to the anti-apartheid crusade. We x are working for a positive relationship between Nigeria and New Zealand, and Africa and New Zealand in general.” General Nwachukwu expressed confidence in the quality of the Games venues. “I am highly impressed with what I have seen. I think your Government and Games organisers are doing a marvellous job.”
