Waikato hopes dashed
PA Wellington Canterbury dashed Waikato’s hopes of winning its first national under-19 rugby league title with a 12-10 victory at Massey, in Palmerston North, yesterday. Waikato went into the match needing an outstanding performance to deny Auckland, which had earlier beaten Wellington 28-4, to put itself in the box seat. “But you can’t take anything away from Waikato,” the tournament organiser, Mr Bob Hall, said. “They were simply great right throughout and they put a lot of pressure on the big guns, Auckland and Canterbury.” Auckland’s win gave it the title that Canterbury snatched last year. Results.— Division A: Auckland 28 Wellington 4, Canterbury 12 Waikato 10. Placings: Auckland 1, Canterbury 2, Waikato 3, Wellington 4, Bay of Plenty 5. Division B: Taranaki 22 Otago 2, Manawatu 26 West Coast 6. Placings: Taranaki 1, Manawatu 2, West Coast 3, Otago 4, Hawke’s Bay 5.
