El Kara too classy
PA Hastings El Kara completed a double for the Hawke’s Bay-Dannevirke Hunt meeting on Saturday when he scampered away with the day’s main flat prize, the Lion Red Handicap. On the first day of the meeting, last Wednesday, El Kara won in similar fashion in bracelet class.
On Saturday, despite the sharp rise in class, El Kara again put a winning break on his rivals on the home turn and careered away to win by six lengths. He provided his rider, Barry Griffin, with his first winner since taking a six-month break.
Maria’s Pal fought on best to win the second
leg of the double, the National Insurance Graduation. The Hawera mare got to the front halfway down the straight and just held off the faster-finishing Indian Duce by a half head, with Timandra Speed and Castledown close up next. The day’s feature event, the Captain Jason
Steeplechase, went to Ark’s Regent, which gave a dashing display of jumping to lead most of the way. The favourite, Full Frontal, ran off at the stand double when galloping furiously in the lead. . Full Frontal’s rider, Stephen Dennett, was injured after being dumped as the horse crushed inside the wing.
